Intervista di Francesca Bellola galleria fotografica Ted Barr, when art meets fashion (versione inglese)
Tra i numerosi eventi che si sono susseguiti durante la settimana della Moda Donna 2015 a Milano, la presentazione di “Emerging from the White”, l'ultima Capsule Collection ispirata da Ted Barr e realizzata da Label2, svoltasi in corso Como, 9 ha destato particolare interesse. Una contaminazione innovativa che ha coinvolto Ted Barr, un artista internazionale che vive e lavora a Tel Aviv, e il giovane brand Label2 Andrea Popovic e Alen Pinku. Federica Sosta, Art director, ha lavorato a lungo al progetto con tenacia e passione, al fine di mettere a confronto il mondo della Moda contemporanea con le pratiche artistiche e l’immaginario inspirato dall’Arte di Ted Barr.
A tal proposito, durante l'inaugurazione della serata, abbiamo rivolto alcune domande all'artista.
Ted domani partirai per New York. Che effetto fa vedere a Milano le creazioni di Label2, indossate da queste splendide modelle che rendono le tue opere ‘vive’?
Emerging from the White è stata una delle esperienze più affascinanati che ho avuto nella mia carriera artistica. La fantasia, l'innovazione e tutta la produzione, ha fatto sì che si avverasse un sogno che io e Federica avevamo riguardo alla mia Arte. Sono molto orgoglioso del fatto che i miei lavori siano stati d’ispirazione per questo grande evento.
E E'una collezione minimalista ma decisa, creata con tessuti leggerissimi in neoprene e organza di seta. I tuoi ultimi dipinti sono quasi tutti caratterizzati dalla presenza del bianco. E’ un colore simbolo di purezza e di amore, che contraddistingue tutte le tue creazioni? Puoi illustrare meglio?
Bianco è il colore della luce e contiene le frequenze di tutti i colori. Così il bianco è l'inizio, in quanto coglie la lunghezza d'onda energetica dell'intero spettro mentre il nero assorbe gli altri colori. Quando la luce bianca colpisce l'acqua si può vedere la bellezza del creato attraverso la meraviglia di tutti i colori dell'arcobaleno. Per me il bianco simboleggia il seme fondamentale della creazione e il punto iniziale per il ciclo della vita.
L La tua arte si ispira all'universo, infatti le tue opere hanno spesso un aspetto simbolico. Hai quindi una visione meno materialista della vita?
Mi pongo moltissime domande su ciò che è il vero destino dell'uomo. I nostri corpi sono limitati per dimensione e grazie alla pelle, ma la nostra mente raggiunge l’estensione dell'universo. Anche se cerco di soffermarmi più sul mondo spirituale, sono di fatto ancora immerso nel mondo materialista attorno a me. Finché lo spirito vive in corpi fisici avrà bisogno anche di cibo.
Pensi che il consumismo occidentale ci abbia allontanato da una visione armoniosa di vita sul pianeta, rendendoci indifferenti e irrispettosi verso la natura?
Ho scritto molti articoli su questo argomento. In breve, io penso che stiamo vivendo in una ‘zona’ che è una deviazione totale dalla vera natura dell’uomo. Gli esseri umani dovrebbero essere parte della natura, non distruggerla. Le persone trascorrono molto più tempo con i loro cellulari, piuttosto che con gli occhi degli altri. La vera natura umana parla di unione, di condivisione, ma nei tempi moderni le persone pensano solamente a prevalere le une sulle altre. Vedo la prossima rivoluzione dietro l'angolo. In una prossima era gli esseri umani non saranno misurati per i soldi che faranno, ma per il loro contributo al Pianeta Terra e agli altri esseri umani.
Cosa rappresenta l'arte per te? E' necessario stupire ad ogni costo o credi che l’arte possa essere un processo di educazione per lo spirito attraverso la creazione?
L'arte per me è danza dello spirito che prende forma e colore. Quando insegno durante i miei laboratori artistici dico sempre agli studenti non sono qui per insegnarvi a dipingere, ma per mostrarvi una possibile via di espressione del sè...In questi laboratori ci sono persone, uomini e donne, prima che artisti.. Vedo l'arte come uno strumento in grado di cambiare la vita per coloro che sono aperti e ricettivi. L'arte può aprire i canali della fantasia, della creatività, della conoscenza, della felicità, e per il fatto che si tratta di una lingua internazionale, anche del senso di appartenenza; può essere la base di condivisione e di unificazione tra gli esseri umani in tutto il mondo.
Come hai iniziato? E che barriere hai trovato prima di giungere ad essere un artista acclamato internazionalmente?
Ho iniziato osservando le stelle e ponendomi domande sull'universo che mi circonda, e sul significato della mia esistenza in esso. Sono convinto che non sia per nulla tutto casuale, non nasciamo e muoriamo e stop. Ho iniziato a studiare le religioni antiche e a cercare il comune denominatore tra tutte le religioni, perchè se gli antichi egizi, gli aborigeni, i buddisti, i sufi e gli ebrei parlano tutti delle stesse cose allora forse c'è una verità, in fondo. Ho scritto più di quaranta articoli su questi temi che si possono leggere sul mio sito www.tedbarrart.com.
Una delle conclusioni a cui sono giunto è che la vita umana non è una linea retta, ma qualcosa di circolare che si muove lungo una spirale, in cui ogni apparizione dello spirito nel corpo fisico non è che un ciclo negli infiniti cicli umani. Io non considero ostacoli le difficoltà che ho incontrato nella mia vita artistica, ma come sfide che mi permetteranno di imparare e condividere. Barriere e muri esistono nel nostro cervello, come ci sono più prigionieri nelle città che nelle carceri. Quali sono i tuoi prossimi progetti e come vedi l'EXPO per l'Italia?
Il mio prossimo progetto è una mostra personale a Perugia nella Galleria di Alessandro Berni. L'apertura è l'8 maggio 2015 così ho intenzione di visitare al più presto Milano di nuovo e, naturalmente, visitare i miei nuovi amici e di essere lì per i primi giorni di Expo. Mi sento affezionato all’Italia, per il cibo, la moda, l'arte e soprattutto la lingua. Nel momento in cui una donna parla italiano, mi innamoro!

Ted Barr, when art meets fashion
Among the many events that have occurred during the last Fashion Week in Milan, the presentation of " Emerging from the White", the latest capsule collection inspired by Ted Barr and designed by Label2 held in Corso Como,9 has aroused particular interest. An innovative collaboration involving Ted Barr, an international artist who lives and works in Tel Aviv, and the young brand Label2 Andrea Popovic and Alen Pinku. Federica Sosta, Art Director, has worked extensively on the project with tenacity and passion, in order to connect the world of contemporary fashion with the artistic practice and imagery offered by Ted Barr’s art.
In this regard, during the evening of the premiere, we asked the artist some questions.
Ted tomorrow you are going to leave for New York. What does it means to you to see in Milan the creation of Label2, where your works 'come to life’ by the all these beautiful models?
The Emerging from the White event was one of the most inspiring experiences I had in my art career. The imagination, innovation and whole production made a dream that Federica and I had, come true. I'm very proud that my works were the inspiration for this great event.
Emerging from the White is a minimalist collection but firm, created with light neoprene and silk organza. Your last paintings are almost all characterized by the use of white. Is it a symbol of purity and love that features in all of your creations? Can you explain more?
White is the color of light and it contains all color frequencies. So white is the beginning, as it captures the energetic wavelength of the entire spectrum while black swallows other colors. When white light hits water you can see the sheer beauty of creation by having the marvel of all the colors in the rainbow. For me white symbolizes the fundamental seed of creation and the initial point for the cycle of life.
Your art takes inspiration from the universe, in fact, your works have mostly symbolic meaning. Have you then a less materialistic life?
I ask myself a lot of questions about what is human's true destiny. Our bodies are limited by size and end in the skin but our minds reach the end of the universe. Though I try to dwell more on the spiritual world I am still immersed in the materialistic world around me. As long as spirits live in physical bodies they need food.
Do you think that Western consumerism has moved people away from a respectful way to live on our planet, making us indifferent and disrespectful to natural systems?
I wrote many articles about this matter. In short I think we are living in an area that is a total deviation from the true human nature. Human beings are supposed to be part of nature not destroy it. People spend much more time with their screens rather than other people's eyes. The true human nature speaks about gathering, sharing, and unification, but in modern life people are stepping on one another. I see the next revolution around the corner. In the upcoming era human beings won't be measured by the money they make but by the contribution they make to Planet Earth and other human beings.
What is art for you? Do you think that Art needs to impress at all costs, or do you believe in a process of educating the spirit through art and creation?
Art for me is the dance of the spirit in color and form. When I teach my art workshops I say to the students, I am not here to teach you to paint but just to offer you another way of self-expression. In those workshops there are human beings first then artists. I see art as a life changing tool for those that are open and receptive. Art can open the channels of imagination, creativity, knowledge, happiness and sense of belonging and by that, and by the fact that it is an international language; it can be the basis of sharing and unification between human beings all around the globe.
How did you start? Which barriers did you deal with before becoming an internationally acclaimed artist?
I started by watching the stars and asking questions about the universe around us and what is my part in it. I had a clear thought that it can't be all random, that we are born and die and that is it. I started to read about ancient religions, to seek out the common denominator amongst all religions, because if the Ancient Egyptians, Aborigines, Buddhists, Sufis and Jews speak about the same things then maybe there is truth in that. I wrote more than forty articles about these issues that can be read on my site www.tedbarrart.com
One of my conclusions is that human life is not a straight line but rather circles moving in a spiral shape in which every appearance of the spirit in the physical body is but one circle in never ending human cycles. I don't treat as barrier the difficulties I encountered in my artistic life but as challenges that enable me to learn and share. Barriers and walls exist in our brains, so there are more prisoners in towns than in jails. What are your upcoming projects and how do you see the EXPO for Italy?
My next project is a solo show in Perugia in Alessandro Berni’s gallery. The opening is May 08 2015 so I intend to visit soon again and of course visit my new friends in Milan and be there for the first days of the Expo. I feel attached to Italy, to the food, fashion, art and above all the language. The moment a woman speaks Italian, I am in love.
